Sir,

I have the honour to report that as far as can be seen at present the British Pharmacopoeia of 1898 contains all that is needed here from a pharmaceutical point of view. The alternative preparations sanctioned for use in India and the Colonies as described in Appendix XI of the Pharmacopoeia are a welcome addition as the insertion of such has legalized those alterations in formulae that conditions of climate and situation have compelled pharmacists to make in a Colony such as this.

2. Although not official, Extract of Malt is largely used here and frequently the samples submitted for approval are received in a fermented condition. A suggestion is therefore made that it would save manufacturers' time if to similar preparations a fermentation test could be applied, as probably were such preparations to be submitted to a temperature of about 80° F for ...
